Kal Key
Kal Key is a London-based singer-songwriter whose feel-good music and heartfelt lyrics offer listeners a space for healing, a welcomed pause from life’s daily grind.
As a teenager, Kal Key discovered his passion for the music of guitar heroes like Carlos Santana and Stevie Ray Vaughan, which set him on his musical path. He started to perform locally, but when the gigs failed to pay the bills, he found himself forced in office life. After years of the 9-to-5 grind, he experienced a life-changing epiphany on the tube home from work. “I was listening to Ray LaMontagne and it felt so deep. It filled me up. I looked around the tube car and everyone else looked so sad and depressed that I thought, ‘I don’t want this to be me for the next 30 years of my life’.”
This realisation helped him find his true calling – helping people find meaning and joy. While he runs a successful coaching business, he also makes music that invites listeners to immerse themselves into a space of healing and self-refection. He released his debut EP, Lifetime, in 2018 and reached the iTunes Ton Ten Singer/Songwriter chart that same year.
Kal Key’s lyrics are the heart and soul of his music. Tapping into his own spirituality, there’s often a prayer-like quality to his songs, urging us to connect to something larger than ourselves, and his compositions take in devotional genres like kirtan and gospel. His songs range from intimate pop tunes to lush productions with full choirs. With a seamless fusion of acoustic and electronic elements, his sound evokes introspection while embracing catchy pop sensibilities and each song carries a raw emotional depth and exudes positivity. With those lost tube passengers in mind, his poetry encourages us to find our joy in the everyday.
